> A community-powered vegan app for Android. Scan a barcode, get an instant verdict. But the real thing is the community behind it — vegans building a database together, one scan at a time.

NomNomVegan is more than a product checker. It is a living database maintained by vegans, for vegans. Every scan, every contribution, every rating makes it better for the next person. Other apps give you a static database. NomNomVegan gives you a community.

## Core features

- Scan any product barcode and get an instant vegan verdict (vegan / not vegan / unknown)
- Community-verified verdicts — real vegans have reviewed and confirmed each product
- Open Food Facts as a fallback for products not yet in the community database
- Scan the ingredient list directly with your camera if the barcode returns nothing — on-device OCR analysis in 13 languages with zero latency
- Submit products you know to help others, earn reputation, and level up as a contributor
- Rate products you love with up to 5 hearts
- Flag incorrect verdicts and help keep the database accurate

## Community and social

- Follow other vegans and see their scan feed in real time
- Community feed filtered by country, today only, or following only
- Pioneer system: be the first person in the community to scan a product — pioneers are tracked on a leaderboard
- Weekly challenges (example: "scan 5 products you have never scanned before this week")
- Badges earned for milestones: first scan, streaks, contributions, challenges completed
- Streak tracking: how many consecutive days have you scanned something?
- Streak shields: missed a day? use a shield to protect your streak
- Contributor reputation score and levels: newcomer, regular, trusted, super contributor
- Referral system: invite friends, both get extra daily scans

## Discovery

- Trending products: what is spiking in scans right now across the community
- Top products leaderboard: sortable by total scans or average rating, filterable by country and product category
- Product categories from the Open Food Facts dataset
- Brand profiles: is this brand fully vegan?
- Community profile pages: public stats, top rated products, badges earned

## Technical details

- Platform: Android (iOS not yet available)
- OCR ingredient analysis runs fully on-device, no network call needed
- Supported languages for ingredient analysis: English, Finnish, Swedish, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Norwegian, Danish, Estonian, Polish, Portuguese
- Backend: FastAPI (Python), PostgreSQL, Redis, running in Europe on a Contabo VPS
- Photo storage: Cloudflare R2, EU jurisdiction
- Authentication: Firebase (Google sign-in and email/password)
- Database: community schema plus a full Open Food Facts mirror
